Trading/Discovery Games - 2007/12/30 00:09

While I like the pirate aspect of the UCW series, my favorite roles are the exploration and trading. Any suggestions on other games that I might try, since it doesn't look like there are any new English UCW's anytime soon? I have tried the Civilization games and 1492 (both are pretty good).

Thank. I went out and bought Port Royale. I haven't got into it much yet, but it seems like it will be a good game. Thanks for the tip.

I've found that Akella's (publisher Bethesda) FIRST "Pirates of the Caribbean" PC game to be fun - It was their followup to their most excellent "Sea Dogs" and was shanghaied by Disney to tie-in to the first PotC movie (even tho it did not quite make it). The game has pirates - and even skeleton pirates - but it is your choice what you do in the game - you can trade, or privateer, or do the quests - whatever you like.

The archipelago for the game is limited somewhat (fictitious Caribbean islands) but you have the Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Pirates.

EXTENSIVE modding by the fan community has turned this game into a real adventure. I highly recommend it - just look for the Pirates of the Caribbean "Build Mod" at piratesahoy.net - Downloads section. The fansite is for people who enjoy pirate and sailing sims - and I modded part of the Build so I'm tooting my own horn here, but it's really made a buggy and disappointing game into a LOT of fun - there's a lot of custom settings so you can play as a lot of different characters and choose how you want the game to play.

There's a main quest which I helped mod into not a game-ending show-stopper, but where you can play on beyond it - keeping or dismissing the comrades you gained along the way and allowing you to continue your fun.

Other modders have done things like add new islands, make it so you can marry, become a land owner, and gain titles or rank, &tc... You can do a lot of things with this mod - some things that the original game writers were looking towards doing but got put on the sidelines when Disney dropped a whole lotta dollars on them to make it a tie-in.

Fun stuff. I suggest you check it out.
