I spent way too much time with this game back in middle/high school and have recently rediscovered it through the Wii. My girlfriend also likes the game and would like to play it as well but it seems like the Wii only allows one save at a time. Is that true? I don't want to test it by saving over the game I'm in now.

no clue dude, i am playing the sega emulator version and it appears to have only one save option as well which is driving me nuts since. i amassed such a great deal that i dont want to erase it to try out another charactor.

you can save much times by emuliator options f5 button quick save in any time f6-f7 buttons change slots, f8 button load game I'm using "gens" emuliator
