I have a certain set of guys I will hire in the game and hire VERY early on so that all the time I am exploring and messing around, they can be training up to be super-navigators. Thats the best way to do it...at the end I probably have around 10 or 12 extra guys I can use for whatever and they're ALL good at navigation and seamanship by the time I am ready to use them. As for Gunnery, I try to get as many of my mates as possible to have this skill...so low level guys like Georg Eggel and Richard Huxley, and Cizarro Fidelity are the BEST guys to get early on because they are inexperienced, yet have good gunnery...so they're people you can really work with.

Also, other favorites, not necessairily with gunnery, are Manual Melgoza and Ambroise (something...I forgot what his last name was but he's in India along with Manual)

Wow Ive never played with such attention.

Right now I am Ali, and I agree that '5 port recruit' mission blows hard. It seems too easy to earn money, but pissing off every other nation and being the merchant who conquers the english naval fleets is awesome.

Well, seeing as how I cant play any of the battle oriented characters on my PC (windows XP pro doesn't support MS dos ems memory, unlike XP phome does, a discovery that ticks me off to no end) I'd have to say that I like Ali the best. Not only does he have about 100 gold ingots just handed to him by the Turkish ruler and the Venice home office of the bank, he makes money faster and easier than everyone else, plus he learns quick and can get the heads-up on just about everything. Give him cartography as soon as you can, sign a contract with the guild in Bordeaux, own bordeaux at 1000/1000 so you can build a fleet of La Reales at 30 crew and no guns with Goddess figureheads, and you're off to the races to raise skills. Nagasaki and Sakai are only 60 days away so you can upgrade to Tekks with max guns and Goddess figureheads, carronades, and about 50 ingots to start trading gold and silver between Lubeck and Maseira, and BANG, you're a multi-millionaire in a years time. And who needs full-rigged ships when you have the faster, stronger, more durable, AND cheaper Tekks? I can own every port at 1000/1000 in less than twenty years, and still have 9999gold ingots trding between lubeck and madeira. Try that with any other character and it'll take twice as long, and you don't have that much time. Only 32 years till you're too old to sail- which doesn't make much sense since that only makes you 50 ans Rocco's older than that at the start. Pretty funny if you play as Joiao. In thirty two years, rocco will be what? 98 years old? Figure that one out. Still, I always liked playing both Jiao and Catalina when I had my SNES system years ago. Never cared much for otto, always hated Pietro, and Ernst's scenario never really made much sense to me. Mapping the world sounded like fun, but then they had to go and ruin it by putting that little snot Paula in the picture so it became a matter of taking her home to china. Blah! Boring. So I have to say I like Ali. He's the most interesting by far, and you can do so much with him. Get tired of trading? Take your Tekks and go kick some pirate ass for a few years. Not like you can't afford it when you're carrying around a few hundred gold ingots all the time. And it's not like you have to go looking for them: just sit outside a port, doing nothing but waiting, and every pirate in the game will show up sooner or later, then knock the crap out of them and pull into port for repairs and crew. Nothing easier

Joao. He can do anything and has the most interesting storyline. The only downsides are rocco is hard to get to 20 knots and getting jumped by pirates when you are unprepared.

My second is Peitro, but his storyline is fast and easy.

Ernst. In my oppinion he doesn't have all that much to do besides making a map. All the other characters drag you around too much. You either get chased by Spanish or other fleets like every time. Which means a lot of preparation before you can finally do other stuff.

It's fun to make Ernst a skilled swordfighter and gunner. Make money, sail around the world about 100 times to get all the ports at maximum rates. Make some of the countries poor and get redicilously large amount of ingots from 'rich' countries when you take down their merchant ships.

It's just too bad ya can't freeze time sometimes because it already takes about a good year or 2 to sail the world, stop in every town.

As for the crew.. I think it's fun to take any reliable pirate (if any) on my journey. Ofcourse they need to have the appropiate skills like Gunnery + Navigation.
There are some nice ones allong the coasts of Africa and in the Carribian at the start of the game, kinda.

And ofcourse it's fun to have Idin Leis and Khayr Ad-Din in the fleet as well. But also Ulgi Ali, Mohammed Syarook, ... etc.

Some others are sometimes quite hard to get because they aren't too often vagebond sailors when you defeat them. Or willing to go with you.
Like, Vittorio Dorio, Victor Russel, Raphael Selran, Palah Abdul, ...
