As far as I know, the only way would be to change the faction you're working with.
Preferrably to the nation that hates you.

If I remember correctly, once they catch you and collect a chunk of money from you, they feel justice is served and hate you less. I suggest you save your game and try this. I'm not sure if the amount you have on you (and give them) influences this or not.

Is it possible to defect to another country and then defect back to your home-country? (I think I already know the answer is no.)

Always have lots of collateral in your possession when ye wish to make your enemies less ticked at you. I never thought about having tonnage of gold in moored ships before as emergency monies... thanks fer the advice.

When I do it I just spend everything I have they will accept 4/5 of 0 as well and lower their hatred to 0 at the castle. However if you get caught by the normal guards it only drops by 20 and they take different amounts based on hatred. I'm not sure about the other versions because I play it on the SNES but I've tested it on that version and that's about all you can do is get caught and pay. As the chap above said make sure you have lots of collateral, you can also keep stocked ships moored in harbors with goods to pull out and sell when you know this is what you'll be doing.
