Equipment/Ship selection Question. - 2008/07/20 06:37

I've been playing UWNH lately, PC version. I personally couldn't stand playing the emulated versions. However, lately I noticed while playing Joao that he can't steer certain ships for anything. Like, I got him a Xebec around navigation level 8, and then thought, "Hey, i can pick on merchant fleets with my wicked 120 man ship!" So, i picked a fight with some Italians, because what are the italians going to do ? collapse ecconomically on me ?
Well, I started off with a eind advantage, but pretty soon i got left behind, the merchant fleet sailed circles around me and pretty much escaped. The Xebec is supposed to be a pretty fast ship, right ? and Joao has good stats, and had a decent navigation level.
So, i was wondering, Can certain Characters use certain ships better ?
I was also wondering about Equipment. Do certain characters use certain types of swords better ? I was wondering because like, Joao starts off with a Rapier, and then gets a Flamberge, both Fencing swords, and his father even asked him about his Fencing. You can'y fence too well with a heavier sword.
Otto also starts with a Straight Sword, and the description of the Scimitar says it's mostly used by Arabs... like Ali. So, i was wondering if, like the ships, certian characters are better in duels if they use certain swords.

Well, I can say that every character uses every type of sword with equal efficiency. Joao, being a noble, was taught to fence - this is why he is given fencing weapons. However, mechanically, he's just as good with the other types of swords. Against the weakest defense type with a value of 1, his (strongest attack type as denoted by sword type) will do equal amounts of damage. All characters are the same way. The descriptions for the swords only give you a little insight as to their origins, though the game is not 100% accurate.

As for the ships, I do not think so, but it's possible. What's more likely is that the merchant simply had a better commodore than Joao (or his slowest captain, if you had a fleet). This is worth looking into, code-wise.

Each character use ships and weapons the same way. For ships, their speed and control will be determined by its turn and speed rate (from 50 to 100) and the seamanship (anchor symbol) stat of its capitain. I thought your navigation level might influenced it but it does not seem to be the case:

I compared 2 mates for a ship. Louis has a navigation level 17 and a seamanship of 41. His speed rating was 8. Another Mate with navigation level 11 but seamanship of 95 got a speed rating of 13. Also, as I mentionned, each ship has a turn (sailing against the wind) and speed rating. The Xebec is indeed excellent for its capacity with a turn rate of 80 and a speed of 70. Some other ships like the barge or galleon are much slower, each has a speed of 65 but a turn of 50. Some others like La Reale or japenese ship kansen and atakabune have 95 or 100 for both turn and speed.

As for weapons, each weapon and armor has a rating from D (worst) to Star (best). The better a weapon is, the more damage it can inflict, the better the armor the least damage you will receive. Also each weapon has a type that inflict the best damage with one type of attack: Curved swords (Lashing) - scimitar, saber, etc; Fencing swords (Thrusting) - Rapier, epee; Two-handed swords (?) (Striking) - Bastard sword. During a duel you can block an attack if you use the correct defense card: Block (b) against Lash (L), Defense (D) against Strike (S) and Parry (P) against Thrust (T). However your strength (sword icon) stat will also influence it.

I have used Ali and got him up to battle level 10 with a strength rating of about 50. I dueled opponents with about the same level but with strength in the 70 and 80 and was receiving and dealing "normal" damage even though my Errol's plate armor and Crusader's sword (both star rating) were superior to my opponent's weapon and armor, usually a scimitar (b) and half plate (b).
